This advertisement by Hardee's was released in 2009 in Pakistan. The advertisement was trying to show the public that the quality of their burger buns are fresh and delicious. Their goal was to promote their burgers fresh quality so that their costumers would be more likely to eat at Hardee's more often. The texts big picture is shown to be trying to use lust to grab the attention of the audience. They try to use unconventional methods to make the audience more likely to read their advertisement and therefore eat at Hardee's more. The use of visual images in the advertisement is attempting to be more appealing and portray the lust in a more direct way than the text does.
The audience of the advertisement is young adults. This is because the young adults would be more likely to be affected in a positive way by the lustful ads. The economic class of the audience would probably be middle class or lower because they would be more likely to eat at a fast food restaurant. Also, the social class that the audience would be apart of would most likely be males because they are more directed toward the male population. The cultural knowledge of the audience is that they know conventions of society. The audience knows that society normally does not publicize lust within the community, so when the advertisement plays it will really catch the eyes of the audience. Finally, the style of the advertisement is a print out, this means that the poster can be hung up in a variety of different places giving the advertisement plenty of chances to get ridiculed by people who are not the intended audience, and be seen by the audience that will persuade them to go eat at Hardee's.
In addition to what you have said, I would say this advertisement is appealing to lust because of the action with the picture. The hand appears to be groping the bun, which is an indication of how people tend to grab their partner's "buns". This is especially targeted for a younger male audience because these people are the majority of the population that enjoys grabbing butts. I like how you added in the implied cultural knowledge of the audience, but I would like to add that this adds to the targeting of the younger people. It is more common that the younger generations would understand the implications of the word "buns" before the older ones, so I think this is important to consider.
ReplyDeleteI find it very interesting that this ad was released in Pakistan due to their culture. I think that more could be said about how socially women are not valued as much and therefore this ad is accepted. I think the ad you choose is very interesting and I am not sure it would entice me to go to Hardee's , but I can't speak for DOM ^^. I do however agree with you and Dom that they are specifically targeting a youthful audience that could potentially be sexually active or curious. With this being said those emotions could tie over into food and create a craving. Great job analyzing these buns.
