Watched by Witches

Some of the tv shows that are watched by the witches of Macbeth are as follows:

Prison Break:
The show Prison Break is about a man who robs a bank in order to go to jail where his brother is held. Then, while he is there he knows everything about the prison so he plans to break his brother out. Then, once they escape, the brothers never face a task that they do not know how to overcome. It is almost as if they can see into the future and know exactly how to react to any event that occurs.

The witches chose to watch Prison Break because they always know what is happening and how things are going to turn out. They then are watching the show to get another perspective on how they could use their supernatural powers of knowledge to better suit the needs of others or themselves. The witches watching Prison Break reveals that even with all of their information, they do not always know how to use it. This is also seen in Macbeth when the witches tell Macbeth three different things to fear after the death of Banquo. They have all of the knowledge but they do not necessarily know how to articulate it into action. This helps us understand that although the witches have immense knowledge, they are not fully able to use it to the advantage of others around them.

It is important to know that the witches watch Prison Break because it shows their interest in improving their use to others and also that they want to know how to better use all of the knowledge.

The Flash:
The show is about a man named Barry Allen who is struck by a lightning bolt after a particle generator explosion and he gains super speed. He is then given the opportunity to help others with his gift by protecting his city from supernatural people who have powers such as speed, weather manipulation, and mutations. Barry is surrounded by people who help him get through all of the tough times and they team up to take the bad guys down.

The witches chose to watch The Flash because they want to help people. This show is about the good guys winning and always helping the city. This reveals that all the witches want to do is to help people, whether that is to help them reach their potential or to help them reach the goals. Also, the witches chose to watch The Flash because of the supernatural characters in the show, about all of the good guys get supernatural powers by the third season. The witches choice of The Flash helps people understand that all they want to do is help people.

It is important to know that the witches watch The Flash because it shows them all of the different ways they can use their supernatural powers to help others.

The Big Bang Theory
The Big Bang Theory is a show about a group of 4 science nerds who work at Cal Tech and are extremely smart. They have a hard time fitting in with others and are often portrayed speeding time in their apartment playing strange games that others are not interested in. The show depicts comedic interactions between the normal neighbor and the two main character nerds.

The witches watch The Big Bang Theory in order to help them understand how to evolve from being lonely to being able to integrate with the regular world. The witches feel as though they represent the nerds extremely well, they have large amounts of knowledge but their gifts separate them from society because everyone sees them as supernatural and do not want to be around them unless they need something. This reveals that the witches are very lonely and desire to be integrated into society instead of being used whenever it is convenient for everyone else.

It is important to know that the witches watch The Big Bang Theory because they feel marginalized in society and are only interacted with when something is needed of them.

Arrow
The show is about a man named Oliver who was marooned on an island and came out a warrior. He became a super hero in his city when he returned. He has many resources and takes down villain after villain, no matter how dangerous or how much the odds are stacked against him.

The witches watch this show because they are trying to understand what it is like to not have supernatural powers. They want to know how others overcome challenges when they can't see the answers from the future. This reveals that the witches don't know how normal people act on a day to day basis because they do not have supernatural abilities. This helps people understand that although the witches have supernatural powers and are very knowledgable, they are still trying to sympathize with those who are not as gifted.

It is important to know that the witches watch Arrow because they want to further understand the struggles of those without supernatural powers.

Power Corrupts

Shakespeare would agree with the quote “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. This is seen in Macbeth when Macbeth kills Duncan for the crown. The monarchy has absolute power, so Shakespeare displays that power corrupts absolutely by explaining all of the people who could be seen as wanting to take the crow. He shows that both of his sons could have wanted to take the crown and Macbeth, so the Duncan’s sons had to flee because they knew others would think they killed him for the power. The limitless of corruption with absolute power is seen when Macbeth kills Banquo and attempts to kill Banquo’s son. Another way that absolute power corrupts absolutely is because there is no one with more power to call out the one who is corrupt, they can perform any act with no consequences so the corruption can be limitless.

I have seen that power corrupts in places such as government, sports, and the business world. Everyone always talks about how the government is corrupt, and one of the ways that they can be corrupt is by keeping each other in office. Since they do not have absolute power in the United States they are not corrupt absolutely. They can only be corrupt enough to maintain their position for their designated time allowed. Also, power corrupts in sports as well. This is seen in college sports when the coaches either pay their players or don’t require them to go to class. This is corruption because they want power to win games with the best athletes and it is most easily attainable by being corrupt and not following the rules. Finally, corruption due to power is also in the business world. I have seen in the news that Donald Trump donates to other people so they have to do whatever he says. This corruption for power is seen when Donald Trump made Hillary Clinton come to his marriage ceremony only because he donated money to her foundation.

Can't Bury These Tales (1)

In Jane Eyre by Charolette Bronte, the elevated diction and elaborate syntax contrast with the feelings in paragraphs 11 and 12 by showing her as very intelligent and educated while her feelings show her as vulnerable and has a history of villainous acts. She shows that she is intelligent through diction such as "dejected", "solace", and "abstraction". This diction combined with elaborate syntax structure that provides great detail would infer that the character should be very respected and should be in a good position within society, but it merely contrasts with the feelings in paragraphs 11 and 12. These paragraphs show fear and anxiety for what Mr. Brocklehurst has to say when he walks in the door. The character "watched her eye with painful anxiety"(Bronte 12), this shows that she has something to fear from Mr. Brocklehurst, but the elaborate and intelligent diction/syntax suggests that she should be proud and respected. Finally, she fears that Mr. Brocklehurst was "making disclosures of [her] villainy" (Bronte 11) and this is direct contrast of her elevated/elaborate diction and syntax that shows she should be confident and respected within her society.

Deadly Sins

This advertisement by Hardee's was released in 2009 in Pakistan. The advertisement was trying to show the public that the quality of their burger buns are fresh and delicious. Their goal was to promote their burgers fresh quality so that their costumers would be more likely to eat at Hardee's more often. The texts big picture is shown to be trying to use lust to grab the attention of the audience. They try to use unconventional methods to make the audience more likely to read their advertisement and therefore eat at Hardee's more. The use of visual images in the advertisement is attempting to be more appealing and portray the lust in a more direct way than the text does.

The audience of the advertisement is young adults. This is because the young adults would be more likely to be affected in a positive way by the lustful ads. The economic class of the audience would probably be middle class or lower because they would be more likely to eat at a fast food restaurant. Also, the social class that the audience would be apart of would most likely be males because they are more directed toward the male population. The cultural knowledge of the audience is that they know conventions of society. The audience knows that society normally does not publicize lust within the community, so when the advertisement plays it will really catch the eyes of the audience. Finally, the style of the advertisement is a print out, this means that the poster can be hung up in a variety of different places giving the advertisement plenty of chances to get ridiculed by people who are not the intended audience, and be seen by the audience that will persuade them to go eat at Hardee's.

What is in a Name?

My name, Ryan Johnson, has a significant meaning for me. My last name shows my heritage and who is in my family, so this is very important to me. To people who do not know me nor my family, my name is very significant to them because it is how they connect us all together. This makes my name very significant to me, I always feel that I need to keep a good reputation for my name because if someone gets a bad impression from me, then my name would connect to my other family members and would taint our family name in a negative way. I feel that my name defines me, but only in first impressions because after a first encounter then people will know me on a deeper level than my name.

A time where I feel as though there have been two me's is in a soccer game. I commonly want to perform at the best of my abilities so that I can receive recognition or awards for my efforts. This me is more concerned about myself and wants the name on the back of my jersey to have glory and perform at the best of his abilities. The other me is more concerned about the group, all I want is for the team to do the best it can so that we win. This me is more concerned about the name on the front of the jersey and does not care as much that I personally get recognition, but rather that the team gets awards and wins. Although this me is less selfish, I feel as though both me's are important to have and they support each other. Neither me is fighting against the other, but one just stresses some things more than the other. I also feel as though both me's help the team and are important to have so you are not selfless to the point where you don't feel you matter, but also it is important to not be too selfish that you lose sight of who you are playing with and why you are playing. This is seen in Beowulf because Beowulf wants to fight and defeat the Grendel because he wants to be a hero and get recognition for the victory, but he is also fighting Grendel so he repays a dept his father owed the Danes and also to get allies for when he becomes king. His two "me's" support each other and are important to be a confident prince and Geat.

The "Othering"

This image depicts Hai and Melanie at the Blue Ox Coffee Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The image was taken by Wing Young Huie in 2012 as part of her "We are the Others" album. The image shows Hai standing inside of Melanie's coffee shop that stands across the street from his barber shop. The interaction between them was the first time they had spoken to each other, but Melanie had seen Hai many times before and had already made many assumptions about him. She had believed that he was Vietnamese and had moved to her street in the United States to get away from the atrocities of the Vietnam war and he then has to see a man stabbed to death just a few steps from his store.
When first looking at the image and the text that explains the image, we can see that the majority see others who are not like them, Hai being of a different ethnicity, and we alienate them. We allow our imagination to make up stories or assumptions that puts distance between each other. Then, when we examine deeper into the image/text we see that the minority, Hai, are more connected into our society than we know. For example, Hai went over to Melanie's store and bought a cup of coffee one day when she was not there to support his neighbor store. This shows that he wants the community around him to thrive and he is not as disjointed from society as people think the minority is just because they are different.
Margarette Atwood and Wing Young Huie present the concept of "othering" through image and imagery. They both try to depict the concept of "othering" by putting an image in the audiences head that will show that their is a difference between classes to emphasize how this physical difference alienates people or groups. Atwood does this through imagery of describing the handmaids as wearing red dresses. This alienates the other women in the society, such as the wives, because they are visually different than the handmaid class and that alienates the wives from the handmaids and presents a mental/physical gap making all the women who are not the handmaids to be the "others" to the handmaids. Huie also uses image to depict the gap between groups and people creating the "othering" by showing the contrasting difference in physical appearance between the coffee shop owner and the barber. The barber is classified as the other because he is alienated by not being the same ethnicity and being an immigrant in Minnesota. This result of "othering" in the image is seen when Hai holds a sign that does not have proper grammar and Melanie seems to have a condescending look behind him. This is similar to Atwood because the "othering" in The Handmaid's Tale creates negative feelings between the classes with gaps between them due to the "othering"
